At this morning's feeding 7:15am (Charity is the last one I feed) for what it is worth, as we all know these mares do things their way, we have dripping milk.

Better get your guesses into Ro and Brady, I am not even gonna give a guess. "Life is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." In this case, Life is like Charity: you never know when she wants Harley C. or Electra to make his/her appearance.

Good morning everyone,

I sure wish I could give you all some different news regarding the status of her Billowiness but those who are watching the cam can see "No Baby Horse for Yewwwww" yet.....

I took her for a walk yesterday so she the chance to get out for a bit. From there we went back to the maternity wing and she received a grooming. I have managed to groom her tail out which was a big step for Charity. This was the second time, and she was much more relaxed.

I groomed Little Bear, Rosie and Misty. LB is really shedding, he now does not look like a wooley mammoth. Rosie and Misty just enjoyed.

I would like to thank Crystal and Gail for all the bathing and grooming they have done over the last two weekends. Everyone in the Ladies Parlour has been done with the exception of Jerri who will have NO part of this silliness. Besides we do not think she would even fit in the wash rack if you could catch her up. Feed me treats but do not touch me is her motto.

Rob has done a wonderful job with the wash racks and hitching post. Everything is set up in concrete with slabs for them to stand on as well as an area for humans to stand on. We now need to get some gravel for drainage to set around the area but all in due time as other projects must be done. We have done so much in 6 months, which took us six yrs at our last home..so we are working daily with the improvements.

Charity update, 4/15/10

We are making strides with Charity even if a little pocket of grain for enticing is needed.




She was easy to catch up, so that I could groom her. I think the big accomplishment was allowing me to comb out her tail. There was a good size knot but I brushed that out making her tail smooth and fluffy. The stains will come out eventually when we teach her about the wash racks. This too will take time, but progress is there.

Charity is willing to learn, you can see it in her eyes. What beautiful big Doe Brown eyes she has. She is also much more comfortable with me touching her face. I rub my hands over her eyes, and she just stands there.

We will do this again today, once I get morning chores done and whatever needs to be done.

P.S. There is is major ear pinning this morning and some side biting, she is actually staying undr her shade and pinning her ears at the cover. She did a couple of side bitings while Truffles and I were back there. Not interested in seeing us, was unable to look underneath as of yet but will do this later.

Charity update, April 8, 2010

Charity update, Her bag is completely full. We have not seen any waxing or dripping, but we do not know her foaling history. We know mares were brought up to a closer field and lo and behold the rancher could wake up in the am and have a baby at the mares' sides.

She is resting a great deal, she is off her food but nibbles throughout the day and she is getting agitated. I am letting you know our observations. Things on the south end are open at the bottom and red in color (for your info MaryL) Anyway you now know what we know, We think a few more days still.

Charity is getting very close to giving birth. It is now time to reveal who was given the honor of naming the foal. She was given this honor before Charity was even saved.

This past year has been an extremely difficult one for her in many many aspects and we who knew were not sure what the outcome would be.

So Linda, Thank You for the names they are wonderful!!

If it is a colt his name will be HARLEY C. ( Calvin) D. (Davidson) since both Linda and Ed love to ride their Harleys and Calvin represents their cat of 19 yrs that they lost not too long ago

If it is a filly her name will be ELECTRA, to me this represents Linda's electrifying personality and the ability to fight and keep the light burning.

Happy Easter to Everyone!

Robert and I wanted to wish you all a wonderful day.

We do not have anything special planned but to spend yet another wonderful day together. We feel blessed to not only have one another, but our truly loyal, devoted family and friends. All of you have been there and we appreciate it.

Charity is progressing through the last stages of her pregnancy at a rapid pace. Over the last two weeks her bag has been filling with the nourishment her little one is going to need. She is drinking a lot of water and I do mean a lot. All this are the signs that occur before birthing.

There's a little game going on at the Charity thread on ABR, guessing the date, time and whether it will be a colt, or filly. No money is involved. The gift is a beautiful pair of horse head earrings donated by Ro, and I am adding a cedar box with horses on the lid, which was so generously donated by our very own Diane..who has been working so hard as of late we have not been able to chat often. Both gifts are beautiful.

Every horse is beginning to shed out but it has been a slower process this time. Some seem to be hanging on just a bit longer maybe they know something we don't. But today is a beautiful day.

Bev has inspired me to get two little African Violets and I know I am bugging her with all my questions to keep them as beautiful as they are.

The chickens have settled in the coop and are producing eggs at an alarming rate and they are yummy. We will be letting a few hatch so we can have little peeps.

Frankly Speaking, April 2, 2010

I I got a request to write an article about cattle, so here goes.

Bovine is a derivative of the latin word bovinus. According to Webster:

bovine: of or pertaining to the subfamily bovinae, which includes cattle, buffalo, and kudus.

Like the word equine, which includes all horses no matter breeding size, color, or sex. bovine does the same for the cattle world. Cattle have horns not antlers. The difference is animals that have antlers shed (lose) them annually, and regrow them the following season. For the most part the male of the species only have antlers. There are exceptions however. On the other hand, horns in the cattle world can be on either gender, or not at all. It all depends on the specific breed, and genetics. They continue to grow from the base of the horn as the animal ages.

The breed of cattle that I raise on my propriety are corrientes. They are a hardy breed that originally came from Mexico. Both sexes have horns. They are smaller in size than other breeds. Corrientes are the primary breed that are used for roping. They are a much leaner animal whose meat is lower in the bad cholesterol and higher in the good cholesterol.



Terminology: cows, bulls, heifers, steers. Here is where people misuse words. Who has ever been driving down a road and saw a herd of cattle? Notice I said cattle and not a herd of cows. If you had said cows you would have only had a one in four chance of being right. In the cattle world bulls are the (functioning, all plumbing is intact) male of the species. Cows are the female of the species that have calved (had a baby). Heifers are females in the species that have not yet calved (had a baby). Steers are the males of the species that have been castrated (plumbing inoperable). So I hope this has cleared up some misconceptions and enlightened you to the world of cattle.

In a previous article I wrote that frank was cowie. This is a term that means a horse is not afraid of cows, and actually, enjoys engaging them.

In just a one week period of time Charity has some major transformations occuring with her body. The others were so gradual, but Charity is wham one change from morning to evening.

When we were out doing the lights yesterday, I could see her full bag from the rear. But as we all know, things are subject to change so quickly.

Lucy do you think we should have a Baby Shower Cake or maybe even a special party because this is Charity's last baby and unfortunately we are going to have to skip a year due to economic reasons. Wish we could help more but we cannot this year.

Plus we have those wonderful MHR eggs, six yesterday. Two of the girls are slacking.

Good morning all,

Today we will begin placing the lights up in the foaling stall as Charity is making some very rapid changes in her appearance. Her bag began to fill early last week and is continuing to do so now.

We have no info as to her foaling process as these PMU mares were just brought up to a field closer to give birth. It was just a surprise for them to see foals next to mamas the next morning.

The muscles around her tail head are slowly slipping away. I went out on a limb just from my observations and past experience last week that we had approximately four weeks. But I do not believe she read the manual, so she may march to a different drummer.

From yesterday morning's feeding to last nigh'ts feeding her bag was even larger. I can't give an exact time, date etc, and I am not going to attempt the foaling strips, could not be a healthy outcome for one of us and I am sure it would not be Charity with issues.

Many of our viewers have been able to watch her grow, and her habits (general) and they are noticing changes as well. with Mary's assistance she will post some educational info regarding birthing of a foal. And our viewers will share what they have observed. Charity has had her feet done, so that is one less thing we have to worry about. She does not like to be caught up, moves away but when she has been caught, she is very sweet.

Good Saturday Evening All,

It was a very busy day here today. Gail and Crystal came out and groomed everyone on the back row. We have to wait for General as we have to bathe him, we tried to get all the dried mud off but it was tugging to much. So it must be a bath.

Charity and I did a bit more bonding, and we decided to try and work on her feet. She was trimmed, without sedation. She was pretty good, only mashed me against the panel once. It was a good thing...not the mashing but the trimming. She and I walked around a bit and she is very smart. She was quite relaxed with our walk and never gave one bit of problem.

Katie is doing better, her feet still must be cleaned daily but they are beginning to toughen up.

You will be seeing me start working with B, Spirit and Justice in the very near future. I am going to begin using some of the techniques Jamie showed me while he was here.

Everyone else is doing wonderful, it has been peaceful which I hope this is the way it will stay.

Frankly Speaking, March 27, 2010

Hey everybody,

Just wanted to drop you all a line and let you know how Frank is doing.

Well, to get everybody up to speed, I left MHR Monday around 4:30pm. The drive home went without incident. That's a good thing. We arrived home pretty late, and by the time we got the horses unloaded and cared for, it was around midnight. Tuesday was just a day to recuperate. On Wednesday, I had a short round pen session with Frank and he actually did quite well. I followed that up on Thursday by turning him out in my roping arena. That way he could join up with my other horses over a fence and I could see how he handled cattle. He is quite cowie, which is a prerequisite for horses on my property.

Supper time came along, and Frank let me catch him without any problems. Friday I didn't have time to work him in the round pen and I've been a bit worried about his soreness after he was trimmed. Stephanie and I have discussed this and we've decided to move on with his training. Time came to get Frank and that's when the problems started. He absolutely would not let me catch him. In fact, he went over the neighbor's fence. Fortunately for him he only suffered minor scrapes. Sometimes it's hard to remember, but good can come from even the worst situation. After almost an hour and a half, Frank let me catch him. That was because I worked him that whole time, instead of taking a short cut.

Great news!

Sinatra is a cremello gelding foaled on May 15, 2004. He has been at MHR since he was a yearling. We're very happy to announce that he was adopted today by a friend of ours who lives in Northern Nevada. His new owner has decided to change his name to Frank.

Frank aka Sinatra is going to an excellent home with an individual who truly understands the needs and the mentality of a horse. I had the opportunity to have him impart just a fraction of his knowledge and expertise and for this I am truly grateful.

THANK YOU TO ALL FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2009

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters,

All of us at Miracle Horse Rescue would like to thank each and everyone of you for assistance, support and prayers during 2009. We cannot thank you enough.

It was a wonderful year, but we had our fair share of heartache due to the loss of several of our horses. It is the circle of life and we knew this when we established our organization in 2001.

We know during these difficult economic times for all of us, that many have been effective by, but your kindness and generosity has made difference in the lives of all of horses.

We are standing by for when Charity must return to the maternity wing, and we have yet another blessed event of the miracle of life upon us. Charity was saved by several individuals as she was going to be shipped to auction and a horrific demise more than likely. Thank you All!! You not only saved one life but two!

Due to financial strain we will be unable this year to save another PMU Mare. We understand that we cannot save them all but we must be realistic.

Happy Spring!

Happy First Day of Spring to All!

This last week has been so very very busy. We have been working on mini projects to accomplish before the big one begins. It is the small ones that get you in trouble and seem to put you behind. But the big ones get done and we overlook the small ones that need to be done as well.

It is beautiful here, I need it to be warmer so I can bath General out. He has more mud on him from the rains and it is too difficult to just curry out. I tried and it was too uncomfortable for him. So lets hope for the 80's this coming week. I do not want him damp whatsoever by nightfall. Guess I could blow dry him....lol

You can tell Spring is in the air! Horses are frisky and happy. Bouncing, running, bucking - the gambit.

This is our little/Big Justice's first Easter, he hears the buzzing and has even witnessed a real live bunny in his stall. He just watched totally fascinated. His feathers are really growing in, and he is becoming quite the beautiful young horse.

We love the new place, and we still have so much to do on the exterior of the house but it will happen. We accomplished so very much in December while we were sick on the inside, you cannot even tell it is a 20 yr old home thanks to all of you and the xmas Home Depot card and my parents.

Charity is growing wider with each passing day, and I am beginning to monitor her closely. We need to get the lights up in the foaling stall. We have to figure out an electrical problem we are having, but we will.

We have been putting together a chicken coop all out of scrap material which we have had on property. We have not had to buy a thing except two boxes of self tapping screws and a roll of welding wire. Then MHR will have its chicken safe and the eggs will be flowing for Lucy.

Wednesday evening, 3/10

Good Evening All,

It was a beautiful day today, a bit breezy but pretty all the same. There were horses splayed out on their sides everywhere today basking in the sun. The were really enjoying it.

Spring is in the air, and you can tell by the playfulness they are all beginning to display, plus the fact that they are starting to shed. They better hang onto some of that hair just in case we get another surprise snow storm.

Charity is doing very well, getting wider with each passing day. We will need to start her on rice bran once she foals to maintain her weight without excess protein which can lead to founder.

Katie has made a marked improvement, it is like night and day. Keeping her feet clean and dry has been a real key. Her area is very very dry. Again she is not fond of the grass hay but does love the rice bran.

They are all doing very very well, which is very important! Thank you all for everything, your support, the bumps, the yummy cakes and for just being you as you make the difference in many lives.

Good Morning Everyone,


We awoke to a beautiful winter wonderland this morning. Actually we were both quite shocked, weatherman never mentioned this at all. As you can see from the earlier pictures posted, the horses and dogs were thrilled. It was quite comical to watch.

It truly was great to see them all having fun! I think Bruno had the best time. He was carrying his basketball around dropping and chasing it, leaping in the air and rolling around.

Silky also gave her display of joy as well, which created a running and bucking frenzy by all. Just a beautiful sight. Even big old Jerri kicked up her heels.

This is a treat for us down here in So. Nevada, so all of you back East and North need to bear with us Lizards.

Good Evening All,

We have been very busy, spreading manure, working and putting up the surveillance cameras. Our goal is to protect the horses on a daily basis, gates are locked nightly.

All of the horses are doing great, and our Charity is getting more and more billowy as each day goes by.

Katie is doing great, it is astounding! The recommendations and procedures advised by Dr. Hadland and Rob doing the work has given Katie the opportunity to be almost pain free. She is bucking and kicking up her heels. She is eating her grass hay and rice bran which is the diet she will live on the remainder of her life.

Good Morning to All,

Well, Rob has been working on the tractor for days now, breaking and spreading everything. This has made a huge difference for the drainage required from all the rain we received in such a short period of time. The only place we are still unable to do at this point is by the round pen where Charity is located. The Yellow Banana would sink right now, it is very soft there and I mean soft. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN OPERATION EARTH

Charity is getting rounder and rounder each day. She has become quite the talker at meal times. She was so silent when she first arrived but not anymore. She is a big talker now. She is doing wonderfully.

Katie is doing great! She is now bucking, which of course requires a lot of pressure on her front feet to lift the rear. She has become used to the grass hay. Bright is with her and this is quite comical, as Bright despises the grass hay but does eventually walk over and begin eating. It is almost as if she is saying, what me eat that stuff, no way.

Dr. Hadland's recommendation for Katie's feet was the ticket, plus the soaking and constant cleaning. Again she is doing well.

Sophie is beginning to put her weight back on with the Sr. and Rice Bran, again Dr. H's recommendation for the old girl. He said the key is a slow weight gain, never try to rush it because it can create other problems internally.

We are looking forward to a lot of warm weather...so we can say "LET THE BATHS BEGIN"
