As a two yr old colt Jonah was tied to a hitching post for the first time, and the individual walked away allowing Jonah to fight the lead rope. The outcome was not good, as Jonah flipped over the hitching post, breaking two vertebra in his neck. Jonah cannot be tied nor ridden, but he does belong to Ro and Brady who have so much love and compassion to give him. However, Brady will tell you his brother will not mind if you would like to buy a few treats for Jonah from our BBQ fundraiser. Ro spends one week a yr at MHR&S and loves all over Jonah. He is very lucky to have her and Brady and we are very lucky to have her as part of our family.

A Horse's Tale, Chapter 47
Its late, Steph and Rob have long since gone to bed. Most of the horses are asleep, eating, or just wondering about. But it appears that three are on a mission, Baby B, Justice, and Casper are leaving Southern Meadow, thats the turn out behind the Round Pen, and heading towards Morning Glory Manor, the turn out to the left of the Round Pen. They aren't talking as to not disturb any of the other horses. But all are intent on their mission. As they approach the rail, they all line up along it, Baby B looks around, "Hmmm, I wonder who got it?" Justice looks over, "Don't know I wasn't watching this morning." Casper nods "Me neither." Baby B turns to them "You need to watch its important." They both nod. '
Very quietly Baby B whispers "Ginger, Ginger" Nothing Ginger is sound asleep, Baby B, looks around, and says in a quiet voice, "CB, CB" again nothing. Casper leans over, and whispers, "I will get their attention." and with that puts his lips together and makes what must be the loudest whistle ever made by a horse. Baby B jumps, "What did you do?" Casper says "I whistled. It attracts dogs and makes horses wake up." Baby B says "Oh, great thats all we need is the dogs." Just as she finishes she hears Bruno barking. She says "Don't move, stand still, Don't breathe, maybe he will not notice us." All three stand perfectly still, the five horses in the turnout are now awake but have no idea what is going on. Bruno is still barking, and from the sound of it he is coming their way.
Five horses inside the turnout, and three outside are standing perfectly still knowing that if they start moving about or God forbid run around, all the dogs will be coming out. Bruno runs up sniffs the air, cocks his head to listen, he walks between, around and in one case under Casper, Justice and Baby B, finding nothing amiss, he heads over to the other turn out. Very quietly and I mean very quietly lets a breath out, "its Ok to breathe now, but don't say anything." This is good since Justice was about ready to pass out. Baby B looks over her shoulder, Bruno is heading back to the house, having found nothing amiss. Baby B waits a couple of minutes to make sure he is inside and all is safe.
Again Baby B whispers, "Ginger come here." Ginger nods and walks over to the rail. Ginger looks over all three then turns her attention to Baby B. Baby B asks "Did you get it?" Ginger shakes her head. Baby B says "The plan was that you were to knock it out of her pocket and get it." Ginger looks up, "Oh, I did, but I didn't get it." Baby B looks around, "Well who got it?" Ginger replies, "I don't know, she shooed me away before I could get it." Baby B looks around, "CB, Charity come here please." CB walks up, Charity stops a bit short, Baby B asks "Did either of you get it?" Charity shakes her head, she wasn't really part of the plan since is still a bit stand offish, and CB asks "Get what?" Not that CB isn't that bright, but it was this morning, so its been a few hours. Baby B says "Ok, Emmett, Misty come here." As they approach the railing, Baby B asks "Did either of you two get it?" Misty says, "No, but." Baby B asks "But what?" Misty looks at Emmett, and says "Emmett got it." Baby B turns to Emmett, "Why is it always the last horse you ask. Ok Emmett you got it." Emmett looks up, and says "Ahh, I had it." Baby B steps forward a bit leans her head over the top rail, "What do you mean you had it?" Emmett looks up a bit, "I saw it drop when Ginger bumped her, and I walks over to get it, I made sure I didn't get to close to her, and I picks it up in my mouth, I start to turn away to go put in my Wal-Mart bag, and she turned and caught me. And she took it away from me." Baby B says "Ahhh, so close. Ok thank you all for your effort, I will let you know the new plan when we come up with one." The five horses in the turn out turn to return to their spots and get back to sleep.
Baby B, Casper and Justice turn to head back to their turnout, Baby B says "We need to come up with another plan, a better plan, People seem to be very attached to those things, we need a good plan." Justice says "We could have a stampede, and could tackle her and someone could grab it when I have her penned to the ground." Baby B looks at Justice, "That sounds more like a mugging than a plan. We need a good plan, something only a horse could pull off." Both Justice and Casper nod. Baby B says, "I really need another cell phone, I can't do online shopping and text my friends with only the two phones I have now. Its really important." Again both Justice and Casper nod.
As they finish entering the turnout, and close and lock the gate, Justice turns to Baby B and says "I can Whistle too." Baby B turns and looks Justice straight in the eye, "If I ever hear you whistle I will bite your ear so bad, people will call you 'One Ear'." Justice lowers his head and walks off knowing she is telling the truth.
To Be Continued.

On behalf of Stephanie, the founder of MHR&S, I need to let you all know the horses do need additional hay. A bale of hay has increased to $19.00 - Animal House in Pahrump has the best quality hay recommended by the vets who serve the MHR&S horses. Adoption of horses had been a source of income for MHR&S but no adoptions are pending at this point in time - due to the poor economy. Some people are giving away sound horses because they can't afford to keep them, others are even just letting horses loose to fend for themselves.
MHR&S has provided a safe haven for many horses in need for the past 11 years and is committed to continue this worthy cause. Stephanie & Rob are constantly re-evaluating the most cost effective way to care for the rescued horses and mules and provide for their individual needs.
We'd like to ask for bales of hay to be purchased directly from Animal House, in Pahrump (775-537-1777), please ask for John, the owner. MHR&S needs a minimum of 10 bales of hay for this coming week. If you are able to help out for the week of 7/20 - 7/27 please place an order with Animal House and also let Stephanie know here on ABR or e-mail her privately at miraclehorserescue@gmail.com.
Some people may want to split the cost of a bale with a friend - every bale of hay will help! Thank you in advance to all who may be able to help out this week or in the upcoming weeks. Below is a link to Animal House for your review:

Silky arrived at MHR&S in December of 04 from Colorado. She was completely bald. Her former owner had test after test run on her and she came here with 38 pages of vet records indicating all tests that had been run on her. We even went as far as to have more blood work drawn and sent to UC Davis to try and find out what caused this and what we needed to do for her. In the winter months she was blanketed, and in the summer months sun screen and fly sheets were placed on her. The results from Davis gave no indications as to the problem. Cozyhorse.com makers of custom horse blankets made and donated an artificial tail for her with special strapping to hold it in place. We began bathing her weekly with baby shampoo and a soft brush stimulating her skin and all of a sudden we started seeing little sprouts of hair. Here she is as of July 9, 2011, with hair and very content in her herd environment.
Silky is a permanent resident and seeking sponsor(s).

Here are Sampson (R) and Blondie. Sampson is Ruby's partner, but he has been quite taken by this long legged blond. Sampson is 20+ and is a mini mule as well. Please refer to the pic of Ruby (posted a few days ago) for their story.
Blondie is a former Team Roping horse. She has floating bone chips in her front right leg and she cannot be ridden. Since no one really wants to care for a horse with her issues, she will live out the remainder of her days at our facility. She is 28+ years old. When the former owners brought her over to us (they lived three roads from us) the son rode her over, racing her against his father's truck. She came up the driveway covered in sweat and limping..it took everything within our power to keep our mouths shut until we got them to sign off on documentation relinquishing her to MHR. After this had been accomplished, in a calm voice I asked them what were they thinking putting her through this. I was told by the father that his son wanted a last ride, and that since she was coming here we could take care of her issues. The vet was called out for the next day since she arrived so late, but we did give her bute and washed her down and soaked her leg. Long time FOBs Diane and Shannon were here visiting when she arrived. Blondie was placed on bute for a few days and leg watered down and iced.
We came up with a plan yrs ago to ice a leg, and that was to cut off the leg of an old pair of wranglers, slip over the leg tie off at the bottom of pant leg, dump ice into the pant leg and tie at the top. We would stand and groom horse for 15-20 minutes while leg was being iced. Again, Blondie is not rideable but she is seeking sponsor(s).

This is Ruby
Ruby is a 20+ yo mini mule. She was rescued by FOBs along with her partner Sampson. They were an elderly gentleman's little driving team, but at the age of 91 yrs old he could no longer care for them. Ruby is adoptable but she must be adopted with her bud, Sampson as they have been together all their lives. She is retired, and if not adopted she has a home here for her remaining days.
Ruby is seeking a sponsor(s).

Grace has been with us since 2007 and was adopted once. She was returned when her family lost their employment and her return is based on our contract established in 2001. When Grace arrived in Jan. 2007 she came to us with a horrid injury to her right rear leg she had sustained in September of 2006 and was never treated. The injury was caused by a piece of corrugated steel roofing which blew off a shade due to the high winds we have in Southern NV. Infection and proud flesh had developed and the proud fleshed area would rupture. The day after she arrived we had two vets examine her. She was placed on massive doses of antibiotics and scheduled for surgery. However, just prior to the surgery both vets wanted to try a powder that eats away at the proud flesh. Grace had a softball size proud fleshed wound, which was doctored twice daily. She did not like this as it is a caustic powder, but it worked, therefore the need for surgery was eliminated and the possibility of being permanently lame. She does get a bit stiff on occasion but if the surgery been done, both vets confirmed it may have involved cutting into tendons etc. causing permanent laming. She does have scarring on that leg. Per the vets, Grace can be utilized for just light trail riding and does require an experienced rider.
Grace is adoptable if you are not looking for perfection, but in the meantime she is seeking sponsor(s).

This is Half Moon. He has been with us since July of 2001. Half Moon was seriously abused in his former life and has many many issues (mentally). However, after being with us for this many years he has come around. He does have multiple personalities and we have become accustomed to the changes of each one. He cannot to this day be tied up to groom or do his feet. The abuse he received was generally received while tied. So we handle him differently as we do each horse at our facility because no two horses are the same. We always know that he is going to cow kick one time when having his feet done. But, he has come a long long way from where he was in 2001.
Half Moon is seeking sponsorship(s). He is permanent resident at our facility.

The next horse in our herd is Electra.
She was born in 2010 to Charity, a rescued PMU mare from North Dakota. She is a draft cross, Shire/Percheron and TB.
Electra underwent hernia surgery this year, but is having to go back in on the 14th of this month for a re-repair due to having an adverse reaction to the materials utilized in the first surgery. She will have her surgery at Desert Pines Equine Center in Las Vegas. They will be doing this surgery for the cost of her being put under. Once Electra has completely healed and has been given the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from her vet(s) she will be available for adoption. She is up to date on all shots, she trailers, can have her feet done, leads and in general loves anything that humans do for her. She has been socialized with other horses, but we have refrained from placing her in the herd scenario as we do not want her to be pushed around by a herd in their pecking order stance. However, she has been with various horses at any given time, which has given her the socialization skills from another horse(s). She is very loveable and quite well behaved. But as we have stated to many, the only thing predictable about horses is their unpredictablity.
Electra is seeking a sponsor(s) until adopted.

Over the next couple of weeks, we're going to be posting the stores of the individual equines at MHR&S. Hope you'll enjoy them and find them informative.
The first story is that of Baby:
This picture was taken at approximately 6pm on July 9, 2011.
Baby is 28 years old. She was turned over to us when she was 22 along with her mother who was 32 yrs old. Baby had very little handling, and could barely even be walked with halter and lead rope. She had a halter on when we picked her up. She had been with her mother and only her mother all of her life. She had no other social skills with either horses or humans. Now she has had a great deal of human contact and does lead well. She can have her feet done, but there are times she goes off into a place in her mind that can and has created issues. However, with a great deal of patience and gentle touches we can get through it. When placed in a herd situation she becomes very nervous, paces back and forth and will go off her food. She does okay with a single horse and is perfectly content being next to one in her own stall. Though she is healthy and it would be great to place her in a herd situation, we cannot and will not place her in a situation that will stress her.
Baby is a permanent resident with us. People are seeking horses they can ride. They are not looking for horses that are pasture pets, nor horses with issues or that require constant vet care. Our area is very economically depressed, and individuals are giving away perfectly sound horses. Adoptions are down, and when we were adopting in better times, the adoption fees were assisting in providing feed and vet care for those horses remaining at the facility. Now that is not happening. Additionally, we believe matching horses to humans is very important. Just because a person thinks a horse is beautiful and that is what they want, we ask that they spend time with the horse to ensure there is compatibility. It either works or it doesn't.
Baby is seeking a sponsor(s) and she is accepting more than one sponsor as all the horses are. Any amount is helpful. At $19.00 for a bale of hay, everything helps.
If you can help, please visit the MHR&S donation page. Remember that MHR&S is a recognized 501(c)(3) organization and your donations may be tax deductible.

Our July 4th celebration
We hope all had a Happy 4th of July
Our family had a wonderful time together. We wish that Nikki could have been with us so that she and her grandfather could celebrate their birthdays together. But she was in our hearts and thoughts. Rob and I enjoyed having two of our grandchildren with us, our two nephews, my sister and brother in law, but most importantly, my parents. We just had a superb day. We had a BBQ of hamburgers and hot dogs, and it was great. I took several random photos to share.
