Good Afternoon All,

I hope this finds you all well. We have been quite busy here the last few days.

All and all everything is going well here. All of the horses are doing well. Justice is growing like crazy. He is two months old now and just beautiful. Faith is doing so well, she has transformed from the skinny, raggedy ann she was on March 18th, and has blossomed to a healthy strong mare, with the most forgiving personality ever. She has come around. Still have some issues to overcome but we are having break throughs daily.

Little Bear is doing great, putting on weight, new hair growing where he had Alopecia and an eating machine. He will be with us one month tomorrow, and has made huge strides.

The loss of Miss Joe was quite the shock for us. She was 30 years old, and she has always had a good life. She will be missed.

We wish you all a wonderful evening!

Friday, July 24, 2009

It's Friday, and for most I hope the end of a good work week and the beginning of a wonderful weekend.

I sat outside early this morning watching the sunrise, each ray slowly peeking over the mountain tops. Looking around the ranch, seeing life spring into action. The birds began chirping, a little cottontail bunny hopping through B's and Spirits pen, chickens pecking and scratching.

Though my heart is heavy over the loss of Miss Joe, I realize that it is the dawning of a new day, and that I must pick myself up, dust myself off and move forward. There are just some things we cannot control and this is one of them.

It has been a pretty rough patch over the last two weeks, but we shall survive. I would like to tell each and everyone of you from Rob and me, thank you for the moral support you have given to us, thank you for the phone calls, but most of all THANK YOU for all that you do for our horses. They are as much a part of your lives as they are ours...and we want to say to you, We are sorry for the loss of one of your horses.

Miss Joe

Miss Joe tried, Dr. Hadland tried, we tried...but she could not go on. At 3:05pm Miss Joe received her wings. We as humans could do no more for her except to let her pass w/ dignity.

We have Dr. Hadland returning for Miss Joe. She isn't doing well this afternoon. I will keep you posted.

Stephanie

Midday, Thursday, July 23, 2009

Hello Everyone,

As I type this I can view Miss Joe, a 30yo QH mare, from my desk. She seems to be a bit more comfortable, but we are keeping a close watch on her. She is having a bout w/ gas colic. Dr. Hadland tubed her with oil, water and electrolytes. I have attached video of the procedure and his assessment. He states that putting something in their stomachs eg., fluids, generally will get the gas to pass. He did do a rectal exam and found no compaction or blockage of any sort, but did note a great deal of gas. Nothing has changed in her diet, so we now wait and watch. She has passed some gas. He gave her a shot of banamine.

Thank you for your support

Good Thursday Morning to All,

Well, as you all know, Levi had dental work completed yesterday. He is finally went back to the Football Field. He was so indignant about being away from his group, I sure could not send him back with the herd in his looped state.

I would also like to apologize for the filming of yesterday, you know foot shots etc. Oh well. It is not my best work, that is for sure. Levi was back to himself by dinner time last night and all was right in his world.

Dr. Hadland gave Dublin a check up, and stated dental work was not required. He is doing fine. We put a fly mask on Dublin and thus far it still is on. The problem we have had in the past with fly masks in the football field is we have a couple of characters that like to pull them off of everyone and then play tug of war. With Dublin being as big as he is, no one really messes with him much, so we are in hopes that it will remain on him.

Everyone else is doing well. We wish you all a good day, be safe.

Good Morning to All,

Awaiting Dr. Hadland's arrival. He will be performing routine dental check-up on Levi and Dublin this morning along with any procedures that need to be conducted on either one of them.

Additionally, Little Bear will be receiving his West Nile booster.

It is a beautiful morning and have tried to beat the heat on some of the chores already. But, it is what it is.

I hope everyone has a great day!

07-19-09, Little Bear

Little Bear taken 7/19/09 @ approximately 11:45am after his bath. He is doing very well.

Stephanie

07-18-09, Bright Eyes

This is Bright Eyes, she is 16 yrs old. We have had her since Nov. 08. She arrived with Sophie. We were informed that she had been abused. She once ran from you when approaching to catch her up, now if you approach her slowly she will stay in one spot. She was terrified of humans, but has since come around. Loud noises and rapid hand movements make her nervous. When handling her one must be quiet and speak softly. She responds to a gentle touch. We were informed that she is rideable, but we have yet to saddle her. We have been working with her other fears first, additionally we do not know of anyone who is tiny enough and has the experience we think will be required to get on her. If you are seeking a lovely pasture pet then you may want to consider her. She can be aggressive with other horses. Lil Pony with Big Horse Attitude. If you are interested in Bright Eyes please do not hesitate to contact us. Bright Eyes will require an experienced handler and rider.

She had a bath Saturday evening and stood. She gives her feet very well, and trailers with no problem.

Friday, July 17, 2009

Good Afternoon Everyone,

It has been a couple of days since I have posted. I have been working outside as well as doing much needed paperwork, thank you's which have gotten away from me. Done! :)

All of of the horses are doing well. Little Bear is our eating machine, head always in his feeder except when he is giving Old Man the hairy eyeball. However, during the night and the wee hours of morning before the sun comes up they are standing next to one another of course in their respective areas.

Marigold and Hagan are doing great. Marigolds pressure sores are getting smaller. I still go out an medicate twice daily. Dr. Hadland told me once I put her medicine on to put some Desitin on the spots he said the flies do not like it. Well, not only do I do that I also spray the AluShield over the top, and fly spray her whole body. When Marigold first arrived here in Feb 11, she was weak and constantly was lying down. Now it is the opposite, she stands and finally about 9:30pm she and Hagan will lie down for an hour or two together. When Dr. Hadland was here last (7/9/09) he was quite pleased with her appearance and demeanor, completely the opposite from when he first met her.

Glory is doing great, she is looking for her FOREVER home. She is a 3 yr old Line Back Dun with the most wonderful personality. We have put two rides on her and she has never offered to buck. She was rescued in October 06 not quite a yearling. She will make someone a wonderful horse. She is not tall, 14.3 but built like a little tank. She is good with her feet, loves to be bathed, loads and trailers well. If you are interested in Glory please do not hesitate to contact us.

Jerri and Apple are unbelievable, they stop traffic in front of the property as they are just so huge. Jerri is still aloof. She does not run away from you any longer, but still is not loveable. Apple, well, she is Apple. She will follow you around especially if you have a treat. She has always been a food-motivated kinda girl.

The photos of AJ and Hope make me smile, as they are magnificent looking and still so much a part of MHR, no matter where they live.

Faith is doing great, she has come so far from when she arrived March 18th, 09 to present day; in many ways. Her body condition and personality are excellent. Then there is her son Justice, he is a stink but you have to love him. He is continously bothering his mother, his favorite thing to do is to bite her ears. She is tolerant for a bit but she will nip him back and has. I have truly enjoyed these last 7.5 weeks with him. He is leading pretty well, does have moments of getting a case of the brain freeze. He gives his feet well at this point and has stopped with the "Jack Rabbit" kicks on the rears, very relaxed. He is defintely a very independent and confident little dude as he displayed on the day he was born.

I have Dr. Hadland coming out next Wednesday to check Levi's and Dublin's teeth and possible dental work. We are going to do this early in the morning to beat the heat.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend.

Little Bear pictures, 7/15/09

Little Bear still needs to put on about 150-175 lbs but we take it one day at a time. He enjoys his feed. These photos were taken 7/15/09 at approx 7:30pm PST as we were feeding a redoing water barrels.
I hope to give Little Bear a bath tomorrow.

Little Bear update, 7/15/09

Little Bear arrived MHR 6/30/09...he was weighed via tape by Dr. Edward, DVM of Idaho @ 662lbs on June 23rd, 2009.

On June 30th, 2009 he was weighed via tape by Cathy Potter, Linda Hayte and myself @ 665lbs.

On July 9th, 2009 had dental work performed by Dr. Hadland, DVM of Nevada. He gave Little Bear a body score of a 3 and wants him at 4.

On July 15th, 2009 I weighed Little Bear via tape and he came in at 700lbs. He has gained 35lbs since his arrival and dental work.

He is improving daily.

All is well here at MHR...

The horses have all been fed and watered for over an hour and a half and it is peaceful.

Marigold is doing great she and Little Hagan are so precious together.

Faith and Justice are doing well. Faith is doing wonderful and whatever she had has passed.

Little Bear, since all the much needed dental work has been done, is eating so well. He is doing so much better. No points sticking him in the sides of the mouth any longer, not only causing him pain but making him unable to chew correctly. As I stated, the one point was very long and I sure would not have wanted to have to chew with that in my mouth either. Over the next 30-45 days we should see some changes in him. We are all very optimistic in regards to him.

I do hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Friday, July 10, 2009

Good Morning All,

Wanted to give an update on Little Bear. This morning he is eating. He is chewing/slurping as dignified as he possibly can. A couple of the points that I saw in his mouth had to have hurt as they were pressing into the soft tissue of his mouth and they were quite large. But they are gone now. I hope that you found the videos to be informative. I am always fascinated with the dental work done on equines and when you know that this truly will help LB.

The alopecia should continue to improve daily. LB has his own grooming supplies as did Marigold and Destiny. Once groomed they are rinsed in a bleach water to keep clean.

He is doing well.

************************************************

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and assistance during the loss of Destiny. It was difficult to do, but the right thing, to release him from the senseless pain he has endured since the age of 1 month old.

Hello All,

Today has been a very difficult time. Destiny received his wings. Destiny was ready per Dr. Hadland, it was very peaceful. I hugged him and I did whisper in his ear all your love to him. At the moment of his passing a slight wind came up, and in my mind it was Destiny running to heaven, not limping but running. I pictured his head held high, his tail flagging behind him and a strong whinny being sounded throughout the heavens.

Stephanie

Destiny, RIP

My dear human friends,
A door called death has closed between us for the moment.
But could a little thing like that
break the bond of love and understanding between us,
Who have been so close? Of course not.

Having left behind the body which no longer serves me
and gave me pain, now
I can be with all of you always and everywhere;
On long delicious walks, at quiet times, and lively times,
Alone, among friends new and old.

Let my excitement with life still brighten your days.
As long as there is a place in your heart which is the shape of me,
I will be with you.
One day you too will come through the door,
And we will be together in glorious ways we have yet to understand.

Destiny, 2008-2009

Faith was seen by Dr. Hadland this morning. She has normal gut sounds, heart rate is good, temp is normal. Her system is working ie., urinating and pooping normally. He believes she is having a reaction to the psyllium which is causing the tummy aches. He does want us to monitor her water intake (which has been good) as we do not want her to become dehydrated. He will be in contact w/ us throughout the day to check up on her and will be returning tomorrow on other matters, but will be here if need be before hand.

He did a quick check on Little Bear this morning and stated he will require some serious dental work. Little Bear will also be receiving a complete physical and blood panel drawn as well.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 - Little Bear

FYI Little Bear

I have been in contact with both the vets that have treated Little Bear in the past. They were both kind enough to fax records on him so that Dr. Hadland can review them on July 9th, 09.

FYI.. We have a call into Dr. Hadland this morning for Faith. She seems to be off. She is pooping but something is just not right. Will keep you posted. Better to be safe than sorry.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Good Tuesday Morning,

Yesterday our Little Justice took his first walk without Faith. He did very well on the lead. He walked with his head held high, ears perked forward and chest puffed out. I figured he was making himself look bigger (as big as a six week old can make himself be), as he was walking past the other big horses. Not once did this little/big guy whinney for his mom as we were walking away. His curiosity got the better of him...so mama was not the important one at the time.

We took him over to the shoeing station and stood for a bit. He had his feet picked out, he gave all four with very little problem. At one point, he started to give a bit of the grasshopper kick on one rear but found it took too much effort on his part so he gave it up and just stood. The next thing we did was fly spray him. He has had this done before so that went without a hitch. The next step we took, with Rob and me right there, is I looped the lead over the hitching post and held it, of course he did not know he was not not tied. He tugged just a bit, but then again too much effort. Rob picked up various things we have in the area, halters, leads, etc., and rubbed all over him (we did this with AJ and Hope) he swung the rope over his head, hung halters on him and no response from Justice. It was as if he had seen all of this before and was bored with the whole situation.

On the way back to his stall the other horses whinnied their praise at him, and he whinnied back. As we rounded the corner mama came running up, and then he realized, oh there's mom, but he continued to walk along He is a bright little man and he loves humans and is very cooperative at this young age..BUT that does not mean he will not have a moment of insanity at any given time. You just have to watch for the signs.

Ginger was in with Little Bear and she was sitting and watching him and he her. It was as if they were having a conversation. That was early this morning before first cup of coffee and I knew as soon as I ran in for camera it would be over. I was right, got my coffee and she had already left.

Here are a couple of clips from the justin cam of the walk to and fro:

Part 1: Justice and Stephanie go for a walk, part I
Part 2: Justice and Stephanie take a stroll, part II

I wish everyone a good day, and I hope someone or something brings a smile to your face. Better still, make someone else smile or laugh. If at all possible take the negative and turn it into something positive....negativity can only lead to self destruction. Remember when we were kids and we were always told "THINK POSITIVE"? So true.

Stephanie

Monday, July 6, 2009

Good Monday Morning ,

I do hope that everyone had a great weekend.

Ours was spent quietly doing the everyday things that are required for the horses. Quiet is always a good thing. We know that summer is upon us, as it has been quite warm or shall I say downright hot. During the winter and spring months you can just buzz through puttering with the water barrels, but now with the heat upon us you scrub about five or six and have to go cool off for about ten minutes and then back at it.

We watch the horses as they all stand outside their shade in the sun, and when I am out with them, I will say...Why dontcha go under there? They all just continue to stand basking in the sunlight.

We had a great weekend before last with visits from our friends or shall I say family members of MHR. Diane and Shannon, Cathy Potter, Linda Hayte and LindaNV. It is always fun to have them visit and catch up on everything and to watch them interface with the horses. Their laughter is so contagious, and it is generally something that one of the horses has done to begin the domino effect of laughter. You may not have seen it, but by the time the story is told it gets funnier and funnier.

Little Bear is doing well. He is beginning to sing for his meals like the rest of the gang. So he has now joined the choir as well. One of his fav foods is the Senior Equine and Rice Bran with of course a cup of Canola Oil all mixed in. His stall is approximately 20 feet from CB an OTTB whose hind left leg was broken many years ago, I have seen them eye balling one another and they do wuffle back and forth. He has shown a great deal of interest in everything that goes on around here, from the dogs racing by to the chickens toodling past his stall. The only time you ever see his head down is when he has it in his feed barrel. Though he and Old Man gave each other the hairy eyeball and the mare squeal day before yesterday, last night at last check, they were both lying next to the corral panels close to one another, and this morning they were standing the respective distance from one another, guess we are not suppose to see the tender moments..ahhhh..but I did.

Well, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful week. I truly hope you feel happiness and joy. Life is too short to feel bitterness and anger. Imagine the wonderous and good things we can accomplish being positive. Have a great one everybody!

Spirit has a new toy

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

video taken 7/5/09

Sunday, July 5, 2009

Good Sunday Morning to All,

I do hope that everyone had a wonderful 4th with family and friends. We really do not do anything on the 4th due to the horses and fireworks, but this year it was very quiet all the way across the board. I think many people realized the fire hazards of fireworks and decided to attend the shows provided by the town.

Yesterday, Little Bear was placed in his own stall next to Old Man, and all went well. However, at dinner time, though separated with their feeders being at least 15 feet apart from one another, they gave each other the stink eye from their respective feeders and gave what I call the mare "squeal." Little Bear is doing quite well, and as we walked to his new stall, took interest in everything going on around him, even stopping to look at Justice for a few moments and a couple of the mares along the way. The herd here whinnied their welcome to him and he responded back while we strolled along. This in our eyes is a good sign of a horse who is full of life.

Marigold got her bath yesterday and she seemed to enjoy it very much. I know that she enjoyed the shampooing as I took a brush and rubbed it through the suds and her upper lip was quivering, as if to tell me a little to the left oh no now to the right. It was great. While bathing her, her fly sheet and mask were both being washed so she would be be completely fresh. Marigold stands so well for everything, from being medicated to being fly sprayed. Once done we took a stroll around the property and she and Justice saw each other. Now that was cute, her ears went forward and he stood very erect looking at her as if to say "Now what are you"? He followed us for as long as he could and was very very curious. But of course where was the camera? Sitting on the patio..sigh Oh well, another photo shoot for another day.

I did pass on your Birthday Wishes to my father and daughter who share a very special day together. They asked that I convey their gratitude and thanks to all of you. Dad said that the greatest B-Day gift he received was being 3/4's of a century old. Nikki said her greatest gift was having such a supportive and caring family and for standing behind her through good times and bad. Our Mina will be coming to the ranch for a week, we just do not have a set date as of this time and I so look forward to her and Justice meeting, as she has watched him on cam so often. If I thought I get tired now, have a six yr old granddaughter hang with you and horses all day. But she and grandpa have a special project they will be working on together, then it will be his turn to hear, "Hey Grandpa, Hey Grandpa!"

I wish everyone a wonderful and safe week, filled with joy and happiness.

Our own Yankee Doodle Dandies!!

I would like to wish both my Father and Daughter a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY today!

Dad is 75 and Nikki is 27 this day....I wish them many, many more!

The big news for Nikki is she and several other Navy personnel will be having dinner with the President this evening on the White House Lawn and will be viewing the fireworks from there that will be displayed at the Mall. She called me last night as she knows this is the best time to call me. We are very proud of her in all she has done for serving our country and continuing to do so along side her fellow sailors and other military personnel.

Again HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD and DAUGHTER of Mine.. We love you both very much!

Saturday morning, July 4, 2009

As of 7:00am this morning we have emailed and requested from Miss Richmond any copies of medical records for past treatment of Little Bear that she may have in her possession on the treatment he had been given while in her care. We have also stated if she is unable to scan we will gladly pay for the postage of said records. She had scanned and sent to us the records of Destiny from WSU, prior to his arrival which we appreciated as it afforded Dr. Hadland the opportunity to review and attempt corrective shoeing on him.

The only record we received on Little Bear was that which was provided by Dr. Edwards from Little Bear's exam on 6/23/09.

The records are important in the event that there could be an underlying situation we are unaware of.

Good Evening All,

Everyone at the ranch is doing well. It is very quiet in the area even with the town holding their fireworks this evening. I believe most of the individuals are smart and not conducting their own personal festivities due to all the dry brush in the area.

There is not a great deal to report, it was a quiet day for all. Little Bear is doing fine. He is drinking, eating and all systems are functional. We did not take our walk today only because I had a matter to attend to. We shall see what occurs tomorrow.

Everyone have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend!
